Our Project

The Mumbai Zoo

The Mumbai Zoo (Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan) is one of the oldest zoos in India, located in the heart of Mumbai. The goal of this project was to digitally transform the zoo’s online presence — making it more accessible, interactive, and informative for modern audiences including students, families, tourists, and wildlife enthusiasts.

Problem Statment

Outdated Website Design: that didn’t reflect the zoo’s vibrant ecosystem and offerings.

Lack of Mobile Responsiveness: making it difficult for users to browse on smartphones or tablets.

Poor User Navigation: causing confusion for visitors looking for timings, ticket details, or animal information.

The Mumbai Zoo, nestled in the heart of the city, is home to over 6600 trees and 270 animals. Its recent digital transformation now allows visitors to easily explore offerings and book tickets online, enhancing the overall experience.

Challenges

While working on the Mumbai Zoo project, we encountered several unique challenges that required thoughtful solutions. Managing communication and approvals between various BMC departments proved time-consuming, often delaying progress. The zoo’s existing digital presence was outdated and lacked engaging, user-friendly features, making it difficult for visitors to access important information or updates. There was a major shortage of high-quality photographs, videos, and interactive content, which posed difficulties in creating an attractive and informative website experience. Additionally, ensuring accessibility for a diverse audience was critical, as the platform needed to support multiple languages, particularly English, Hindi, and Marathi.

Solution

To create a visually appealing and emotionally engaging experience, we incorporated design elements inspired by nature throughout the Mumbai Zoo website. This included the thoughtful use of organic textures, hand-drawn leaves, earthy color palettes, and playful design motifs that mimic the natural environment. One of the standout visual features was the inclusion of decorative pins—designed to resemble those used on physical boards—to add a fun, scrapbook-like feel to image cards and highlights across the site.
